UPCOMING OPPORTUNITIES

FROM ARTISTS TO ARTISTS

A permit, to permit

The ruined house is bare yet standing, emptied of some walls, some functions, some lives. Where and with whom should we seek permission to reenact? What future do we imagine for this ruin?

Our annual theme straddles the performativity of the word ‘permit' in its double meaning as a bureaucratic document and as a negotiated act, evoking various, often opposing, approaches, gestures, processes, and conclusions. As we at Glasshouse are negotiating the conditions of obtaining a permit to rehabilitate a vacant house/rural ruins as performance, we consider the consent of land, matter, and other non-human beings in addition to regulatory authorities. In this spirit, we invite artists, curators, and scholars to imagine this and other ruins, this or other conditioned permissions, in their performed state as dramatic actants. We invite performance works in various stages of development that involve the negotiation of permission as an integral component.

As always, acts of generosity, of care, of useless gestures are welcome in our autonomous ruin.

With this theme in mind, we are offering three types of open calls, crafted to serve artists locally and beyond:

  • Our Artist In Residence Program (A.I.R) offers two sessions of one week residencies open to all performance artists regardless of geographic location.

  • Our Event Program S.O.U.P offers two open calls: to present at our annual 24h festival and to organize a durational event.

  • Conversation Lab offers a discourse space for local artists in or around Ulster County.
